My Mom Taught Me to Be a Mom

I have had several thoughts about motherhood and love (mostly about my mom) the past few days and, although I usually don't post personal thoughts, I thought it was appropriate to share.

I know it sounds so cliche, but I never knew how much my Mom Loved me until I had Noah. Motherhood has given me a new perspective on things and I believe I am just starting to realize the love, sacrifice, and care my mom has so willingly given me and my syblings over the years. It's ALOT OF love! Wow!

My mom is truly an amazing woman and a perfect example of Christlike love. Love is a feeling in the heart that is undescribable until you have felt it yourself, and a mother's "love" is no different. My heart melts at the simplest thought of Noah. I have seen my mom endlessly sacrifice and put the needs of her family before her own. I always seemed to get that new pair of jeans, dance lessons, car, or whatever,...and I know that usually came out of her spending money. Mom, it's time to put your wants and needs at the top of the list, but from the bottom of my heart, thanks for sacrificing for me. My mom taught me to love Jesus Christ. I remember several times walking in her bedroom while she was on her knees. Her testimony and faith have been a steady rock in my spiritual journey. Mom, from the bottom of my heart, thanks for teaching me to love the gospel. My mom taught me how to love, and how to be loved. Mom, from the bottom of my heart thanks for loving me. I know I'm not perfect and I am most certainly learning on this road called "motherhood", but all of the good things I do, I learned from my mom. Mom, from the bottom of my heart, thanks for teaching me how to be a mom. Hopefully I can follow in your footsteps and be the kind of mom you have been for me, for my children. I love you. Happy Mother's Day!

I've thought about Brad's mom Dianne a lot too. Although I didn't even know her during Brad's childhood years, I will forever be grateful for her being such an amazing mother to my husband. Without her, Brad wouldn't be the man that he is, and I love that man very very much. Because she was a incredible mother, I have an incredible husband.

Then of course my mom's mom and Brad's mom's mom,...they ultimately made us the people we are today too. Amazing to think how many generations of "mothers" have affected who we are today.

When Brad and I were trying to get pregnant, Mother's day was so extremely hard on me. Seeing the little kids singing sweet songs in sacrament, gifts being handed out to the "moms", and testimonies shared of amazing moms. I have now come to realize that motherhood isn't about "pushing a baby out", but having the desire to love and care for others. I have many friends who are trying to conceive, who have or are trying to adopt, or who are planning on having children someday. To them, just as much as any of us, Happy Mother's Day!

Wow! How lucky are we to have mothers!?! All women have the gift of "nurturing" planted in the root of their hearts. How grateful I am to be a woman, to have amazing women as examples to me, and for all the women who constantly bless my life for good.

Happy Mother's Day!

P.S. Brad got me these beautiful hanging baskets for Mother's day. How lucky I am to be a Mom.

  1. My Dear Shelley,
I think I am the lucky one. I am so fortunate to have you as my daughter. Thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts and feelings. It does make a huge difference when you become a mother. When you are a teenage girl, and you have a crush on a boy - you think you know what love is all about. When you become a mother, you understand that love is so much more than that. Part of my joy is watching you be a mother. I know you love that little Noah - and I love you. Mom
